Processions celebrating military victories. Primary examples were the large spectacles surrounding the procession of the Roman army entering the city by a dedicated gate, accompanied by captured leaders, enslaved people, and booty of the conquered. Later use of the phrase connotes any procession celebrating victory as is common in allegorical and symbolic visual art, especially since the Renaissance.
