Definición

Refers to the period and cultural style of a dynasty that ruled in northern Korea, Manchuria, and the Maritime Province of Siberia from 698 to 926 CE. Founded by Dae Joyeong, a refugee from Goguryeo, with other refugees and the Mohe tribes, Balhae is regarded as a successor to Goguryeo that coexisted with Unified Silla in what is sometimes called the Northern and Southern States Period. Balhae art maintained Goguryeo traditions while absorbing Tang Chinese influences to develop distinct forms. Tombs included stone, earthen, and brick constructions. Some adopted corbelled ceilings under the influence of Goguryeo, and Buddhist influence led to the construction of brick pagodas above the tombs. Buddhist sculpture in clay, stone, and metal featured images such as Avalokitesvara and twin-seated Buddhas, while pagodas were typically brick-built. Earthenware, lead-glazed ware, sancai ware, and white porcelain have been excavated from Balhae archaeological sites. Daoism and Confucianism were practiced alongside Buddhism, as reflected in associated artifacts.
