Definición

Refers to the major ceramic style of the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392), one characterized by green-toned glazes. The usual clay body contains trace amounts of iron, giving it a grayish-white color that distinguishes it from the pure white body of contemporaneous porcelains. The glaze ranges from green to bluish hues, with the finest color termed "bisaek" (jade green) in Korean. The translucency of the glaze allows the effective use of inlay decoration. Although most wares were undecorated, various techniques were employed, including incising, relief carving, openwork, painting with iron or copper pigments, and slip painting. The greatest artistic and technical refinement was achieved in the 12th–13th centuries, while in the 14th century vessels tended to have thicker walls and turned yellowish in tone.
