Definición

Refers to a ceramic style produced from the 14th century through the first half of the 20th century in Yanggu, an inland area in northern Gangwon-do (province). Among the relics known as the "Votive Reliquaries Offered by Yi Seonggye," dated to 1390 and 1391 (at the end of the Goryeo period), there is a large white porcelain bowl that is identified as Yanggu white porcelain. After the establishment of the official court kilns in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do around 1467, Yanggu became one of their major sources for the supply of kaolin clay. Yanggu ware consisted mainly of plain white porcelain and blue-and-white porcelain. Iron-painted white porcelain and pottery were also produced there. In the late Joseon period, Yanggu blue-and-white porcelains were decorated with Chinese characters denoting longevity and good fortune, as well as floral and plant motifs.
