Refers to a type of kiln support used in firing ceramics. Small pieces made of clay, sand, or another refractory material were attached mainly to the feet of vessels, placed in saggars, or stacked, to allow easy separation after firing. The choice of material varied by quality and period, providing references for dating ceramics.
