Refers to an ordinary ceramic bowl or to a coarse, roughly made vessel of low quality. The term combines "mak" (reckless in Korean) and "sabal" (bowl). It conveys the sense of the humble, non-precious vessels made by anonymous potters rather than named artisans. From the 16th to early 18th centuries in Japan, such bowls were esteemed as tea wares since they resonated with Japanese aesthetics and tea philosophy. They were collected and valued under names such as Korai chawan (Korean tea bowl) and Ido chawan.
