It holds significant cultural importance in Cambodia, where several villages are named after it, and in Thailand, where its bark has been used for papermaking for over 700 years, with nearly all surviving ancient Thai documents and Buddhist texts written on it. The paper produced from its bark is notably durable, resistant to humidity, burning, yellowing, and insects, while in Vietnam its coarse leaves are traditionally used as natural sandpaper.
