Refers to ceramics coated with a black glaze high in iron content. It is distinct from wares with a body painted with iron pigment under a transparent glaze. Its production increased in China after the third century along with celadon. It had been introduced to Korea by the fourth century, particularly in the territory held by the Baekje Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period. Black-glazed ware was produced in Korea in small quantities alongside celadon during the Goryeo Dynasty and along with buncheong sagi (buncheong ware) and white porcelain in the first half of the Joseon Dynasty. Some kilns specialized in black-glazed ware during the late Joseon period, along with limited quantities of white porcelain. Before the modern era, its black color was likened to crows, and the ware was therefore also called "oja" (literally, crow ware) with typical forms being bottles and jars.

Shiny black coating that is well-known on Athenian pottery. It is created by painting with a black slip mixture before a three-stage firing process. Oxygen is removed from the kiln in the first stage and the lack of oxygen and high temperature causes the clay to turn black while the slip mixture melts into black gloss. Oxygen is then re-introduced, causing the un-coated surface to turn red-orange. The black gloss is unaffected at this stage, and the coated area remains black.

Fine ware that was widely produced in the Mediterranean region from the 4th to the 1st centuries BCE. It is distinguished by being wholly or in part covered with a black slip or gloss, which is not actually a glaze (although it is sometimes called "black-glaze ware"). This ware developed from later Attic production, but by the Hellenistic period (about 330-30 BCE), it had become the most popular fine ware throughout the Mediterranean. It was the first pottery to be exported in quantity from southern Italy by the 3rd century BCE.
