Historically inhabiting upland forested landscapes where they practiced swidden agriculture as their main livelihood, the Brao have experienced significant displacement as many communities in both Laos and Cambodia have been variously manipulated, coerced, or forced to resettle to lowland areas and adopt wet rice cultivation. This resettlement represents a major disruption to traditional Brao land use patterns and subsistence practices that were historically centered on upland forest environments.
