Rakes having relatively short, curved teeth and a handle, used for arranging and straightening the thatching material as it is laid on the roof or for removing the thatch (cut shafts of grass) after mowing. When used for roofing, the handle may be perpendicular to the rake or it may be attached on one end along the same plane as the rake.

In European tradition, an underlayer of plant material is permanent, and the upper weathering layer is replaced or repaired as needed over time. In tropical traditions, thatching may cover the roof as well as one or more walls.
